Pizza Sauce

No good. No bueno. Ugh.

Last week, we had one of those long days, screw the dinner plans kind of night. I just did not want to cook and make a homemade pizza from scratch. We always have pre-made pizza crust on hand in the pantry just for nights like this. (I use the gluten free one that’s also lactose free from Aldi for Adam and Kelsey). We just throw on our toppings, bake for a bit and dinner is done. Win.

Except last week, we realized we didn’t have any pizza sauce so we made a quick trip to the store. Got home, opened the trunk and the sauce rolled out and smashed on the garage floor. True story.

You guys are probably sitting there thinking, what a waste of time. She could have just cooked something and avoided all that. True. But you wouldn’t have seen how to make pizza sauce if I had! So in a pinch, I checked my pantry and had some fresh tomato sauce on hand (finally something went right). So I tossed it in a pot, added some seasonings, and boom. The best 5 minute pizza sauce recipe ever.

I used Hunt’s tomato sauce, which is another pantry staple. Basic tomato sauce can be used in many recipes, like my Slow Cooker Taco Chili, homemade spaghetti sauce, etc. It’s a great blank canvas for you to add your seasonings depending on what kind of dish you’re making. It’s perfect for times like this where you really need to make something FAST.

Now that I’ve got this great recipe in my repertoire, I may never go back to buying store-bought pizza sauce. This is so easy to make and it can even be frozen. Plus, it’s actually cheaper than buying pizza sauce, a can of Hunt’s tomato sauce is less than $1 at Walmart. That’s a double win right there. Enjoy!

This looks amazing! Is there a link to your pizza crust? I can’t find one. Love your buns, could that be used as a pizza crust?

  6. Betsy says:

Well, I made it tonight and let it simmer for almost 2 hours because I like thick pizza sauce. It was awesome!!! By far, the best pizza sauce I’ve ever tried to make! I paired it with Bobby Flay’s pizza crust recipe and it was so good!

  7. Betsy says:

Is the can of tomatoe sauce that you used really 115 ounces?? I have a large can of Hunts No Salt Added Sauce and it is 29 ounces.

    • Betsy says:

Oh, I just figured it out, sorry! I should have read this as (1) 15 oz. can! Now I get it!!! Time to go double up on my herbs for my 29 ounce can of tomato sauce!

    • Shay says:

No, it’s one 15 oz. can. Sorry the recipe card doesn’t leave enough space to make that more clear 🙁

Thanks!! Cheap and easy. I didn’t use the sugar but I added a leftover packet of Parmesan cheese from a previous pizza order and it made all the difference. Also, only half of the basil. Wonderful, thank you! (If you want spice throw in a few red pepper flakes.)

  9. Excellent idea Sharon, we LOVED it! We often look for an easy pizza/pasta sauce, and that one is by far one of the best! Great work!
