Slow Cooker Cinnamon Applesauce

I’ve been having a hard time getting back into the swing of things. Adam (p.e. teacher) went back to work last Monday. He was home for two months. That’s a long time to get used to having extra hands around the house, extra eyes on the kids and extra help all day, every day.

I’ve had less time playing in the kitchen, less time taking pictures and less time working on this lovely little blog. Basically, it’s been tough trying to figure out how to balance it all. I’m sure I’ll get a nice little routine down one of these days…

Anyways, now that it’s September, it’s time for some apples. I love apples, baking with apples, cooking with apples, apples, apples, apples.

And if you read my homemade peach ice cream post, you know I’m a summer girl BUT apples are not a ‘fall’ food for me. They’re a ‘September’ food. I’ve mentioned before that I’ve got some weird/quirky little food rules. While I won’t be welcoming the start of fall early but I will be enjoying apples in September.

Apples in September, pumpkin in October. If that doesn’t make any sense to you, that’s ok because first of all, they’re my rules and second of all, it’s 10:00 at night and I’m drafting my fantasy football team as I write this.

This Slow Cooker Cinnamon Applesauce? It’s sooo good. Kelsey loves it. I love it. We all love it. And Kelsey helps me make it too. Her job is dumping everything into the slow cooker for me. I love recipes like this when I can make something with my two-year-old and it’s not stressful.

I also prefer homemade applesauce to store-bought. It tastes so much better and it’s really easy. The only work is peeling and cutting the apples but it’s completely worth it! If you’ve never made your own applesauce before, do it! You won’t go back. Trust me on that one. So go ahead, try it and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 9 medium Granny Smith apples peeled, cored and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 1 C water
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a slow-cooker and cook on low for 6 hours.
  • After 6 hours, mash apples to desired thickness. I use a potato masher because I like my applesauce with some chunks of apple in it.
  • Serve warm or cold.

Made this recipe for Thanksgiving this year. The recipe said to keep in crock pot for six hours. It only took 1 1/2 hours on High. The consistency was great and the flavor fabulous.

  2. Deby S says:

This looks amazing! However, I am trying to transition to a diet free of processed sugars. Is there a healthy alternative to the brown sugar or can I just leave it out? I am a disaster in the kitchen when left on my own! Thanks!

    Can you double this receip?

Made this recipe Sunday. It turned out perfect. Going to have it with pork chops for supper tonight.

  6. Heidi says:

Do you have to use Granny Smith? I have honey crisp but I’m wondering if it will be too sweet without the tang of the Granny Smith? Thanks!

    • Sharon says:

Hi Heidi, you don’t have to use Granny Smith for this recipe but if you use a sweet apple, definitely cut back on the sugar so your applesauce isn’t too sweet. I make a Whole30 version of this with sweet apples and NO added sugar often 🙂

  7. Ali says:

What size crock pot would you suggest?

Thank you for these great tips on Applesauce. Quick question, how long does it stay good in fridge?

    • Sharon says:

Hi Randi! Homemade applesauce is good for 7-10 days refrigerated. If you can’t eat it all within that time, you can always freeze it and defrost it when ready to use 🙂

  9. Ann says:

I had some extra apples I knew would not get eaten so instead of letting them rot I made this apple sauce. Super easy and super tasty. Shared some with a neighbor and she loved it too. Next time I will leave some peelings on for a little more texture. I used three different types of apples and added just a little more brown sugar.

  10. Chrissy says:

About how many jars does it make? Just trying to plot and plan. Love your site!

    • Sharon says:

You know, I’ve never actually measured out how much it makes… Definitely need to get on that! I’d estimate it makes about 1.5 quarts though.

  11. Sharon says:

    Hi Dawn,
I have never canned before but I don’t see why you couldn’t if you take the necessary steps for canning. If you do, please let me know how it works out for you!

  12. Dawn says:

What a wonderful idea! Can you can this?
